Scene Three:
(Setting: Doctor's office. James is sitting in front of the the desk.
Character: James, Doctor Lang)
Doctor Lang: (to James; entering room from left and sitting behind desk) Mr. Donalds? I'm so sorry for the wait. We have been hectic in the in emergency room.
James: (anxiously) How is Topaz, doc?
Dr. Lang: (evenly) Well, Mr. Donalds...
James: Just call me James, please.
Dr. Lang: Certainly, James. Topaz is in stable condition. Her vital signs are being monitored, and her levels are returning to normal. She had had a small concussion when the car flipped. However, brain functions seem to be fine.
James: Can I see her now?
Dr. Lang: No, I'm afraid not. She is asleep right now-we have her on pain medication and we are still running tests.
James: (tensely) What for? Isn't she okay?
Dr. Lang: James, I'm afraid not. We are not completely sure yet, but Topaz seems to have suffered a blow to her spinal cord, breaking her back.
James: (heart broken; hopeless and despaired) What?
Dr. Lang: We believe that Topaz has been paralyzed from her waist down.
(Quick curtain closed; end of scene three)
